Local Resident Gets Chance of a Lifetime

Local resident, Sofia Lyon, has already experienced a lot in her nearly fourteen years of life. Born in Tucson, she has lived in Rancho Sahuarita for almost its entirety. (She and her family moved to Phoenix briefly, but later returned to the community because they missed it so much.) And now, even though she has lived through moves, challenges in life, maintenance of a busy and rigorous school and extracurricular schedule and even the discovery of a rare illness when she was very young, she continues to thrive and lead an incredible and inspiring life.

She is the President of the Green Valley/Sahuarita Interact Club, (which is like a youth Rotary for middle and high schoolers), youth ministries at Grace Church of Sahuarita, the Sahuarita Toastmasters and more. She has a passion for politics, and aspires to go to Harvard and even one day to be President of the United States. It is with high hopes and incredible dreams such as these that she is presented with an amazing opportunity.

She was recently chosen to represent our state and community at the 2017 Presidential Inauguration. She will not only be attending it, but she also has the opportunity to participate in a five-day Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit. The amazing opportunity, however, comes with a price. She is seeking and is very appreciative of any community help and support that she can garner. That process has been rewarding also she says, as in trying to raise money she has had the chance to speak at new places and meet many new people.

She said, “One of my favorite quotes from John Quincy Adams is: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” I hope to first inspire our community’s youth, then to inspire the next generation of our world to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, in hope for a better tomorrow.”
